Local Purchase – Post Secondary

Objective:
To assist individuals to overcome significant employment barriers that prevents the successful integration and maintenance with the local labour market.

Post Secondary:
The AAMB definition for Post-Secondary training is “a program of studies by an educational institution listing grade 12 or its equivalent as a prerequisite.”

Eligible Students Are:
In order to apply for financial assistance from the Akwesasne Area Management Board, students must demonstrate that they meet one of the three options presented and clearly meet all the criteria listed in the applicable option, as long as you are not deemed ineligible under the section titled Ineligible Students.

Option  One:

  1. Only receiving book and tuition from AMBE and are not eligible for a living allowance from AMBE or other funding sources;
  2. In the second half of a 2 or 3 year College or 4 year University Program;
  3. Able to demonstrate that other funds have been secured which are sufficient to meet the difference between the Post-Secondary Support Program contribution and overall tuition costs, and that these funds will be committed and expended prior to the expenditure of AAMB funds.

 

Option Two:

  1. Just beginning a one-year program and not receiving full AMBE living allowance;
  2. Able to demonstrate that other funds have been secured which are sufficient to meet the difference between the Post-Secondary Support Program contribution and overall tuition costs, and that these funds will be committed and expended prior to the expenditure of AAMB funds.

 

Option Three:

  1. Re-entering the labour force, or pursuing a new career or where the AMBE or AAMB has not sponsored (training or work related funds) the client under a different career path in the past five [5] years unless it can be proven the training is progressive;
  2. In the 2nd half of a 2 or 3 year college or 4 year university program;
  3. Able to demonstrate that other funds have been secured which are sufficient to meet the difference between the Post-Secondary Support Program contribution and overall tuition costs, and that these funds will be committed and expended prior to the expenditure of AAMB funds

 

Ineligible Students Are:

  1. Receiving maximum AMBE, or other Post Secondary Education funding that includes tuition, living allowance, books and travel; or
  2. On probation and have to go without AMBE funding for one[1] semester; or
  3. Unable to demonstrate a commitment of other funds to meet the difference between the overall tuition costs and the Post-Secondary Support Program allowable amount, and which other funds can be expended prior to the expenditure of AAMB Funds.

 

The student must make every effort to apply in person with the Career Development Officer to ensure that all application procedures listed below are fully completed.  Applications must be completed no later than one month prior to course start date.To apply the student must:

  1. Complete a Client Information Form for educational assistance.
  2. Provide Social Insurance Number Card for verification or acceptable proof of Social Insurance Number,
  3. Submit a copy of Notification of Funding from the Ahkwesahsne Mohawk Board of Education.
  4. Submit a program outline.
  5. Submit a copy of their class schedule/ book list
  6. If applicable, the student must submit a copy of their tuition bill
  7. If applicable, the student must submit grades from the previous semester.
  8. The student must meet with the Career Development Officer to develop individual  Career Action Plan / Career Assessment
  9. Letter of Request ( for financial assistance)

With 1 dependent $1,150
With 2 dependent* $1,325
Maximum 2 dependents*
M1 Married Student with Employed Spouse $745
With 1 dependent $935
With 2 dependent* $1,135
M2 Married Student with Dependant Spouse $985
With 1 dependent $1,150
With 2 dependent” $1,325
M3 Married Couple both Full time Students $745
When students and spouse are both full time students, one student will receive the married student with dependant spouse rate and the other will receive same as S2

Supplementary Allowances:After receiving notification from any agency that a supplementary allowance is being provided to an AAMB client, this amount will be deducted dollar for dollar from the AAMB rate.

Types of Courses Funded:
Funding will only be considered for courses that are offered by an accredited college or university.  Students enrolled in correspondence or independent study are not eligible for living allowances.  The AAMB will not fund an allowance for an “online course” but may pay the tuition for an online course (at an accredited institution) if applicable.
